i was in the car one night and they came on but i am not sure how and then they have never come on since then.How do you turn on lights behind a/c controls in 1997 toyota 4runner?

Are your other dash lights on? If so it could be a loose connection or a bulb went out. There's a rheostat for the dash lights- probably to the left of the steering wheel on the panel.
